Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has responded to criticism over his recent goalscoring in all competitions. The Belgium international joined the Red Devils from Everton last summer, and he has since cemented a regular spot in the starting line-up.
Lukaku started the campaign in fine fashion with 11 goals in just 10 matches, but the month of October brought no joy as he failed to score in six appearances. Despite his lean streak, Jose Mourinho has recently insisted that the Belgian’s position is ‘untouchable’ and Lukaku has now come forward to answer his critics.
“I think a lot of people are judging me as the finished article. I’m 24 – you can’t judge me as the finished article. I’d rather have a year where I improve, improve, improve rather than going straight to the top and then declining. I know I have a lot of talent. I can do a lot of stuff, score goals with my left, right and head. But I want to be a creator – I want to have more assists. I want to be a winner and take my career to the next level,” he said in an exclusive interview with Thierry Henry on Sky Sports.
Lukaku contributed a match-winning assist in the 1-0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, and he will have his sights on finding the scoresheet versus former club Chelsea, whom United visit next in the Premier League.
United are presently five points behind league leaders Manchester City, and they may have to go for the win at Stamford Bridge with their cross-town rivals likely to secure three points versus Arsenal. Jose Mourinho’s men have tended to play with a defensive mindset against the big teams on the road, but the fans will surely expect a different playing style this weekend in order to come up with a positive result.
