Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Jose Mourinho should take the decision to axe Alexis Sanchez from the starting line-up after the Chilean put in a poor showing against Sevilla in the Champions League on Tuesday night. The 29-year-old struggled to find a consistency to his play through the game, and he ultimately cut a frustrated figure as the Red Devils bowed of the elite competition by a 2-1 aggregate scoreline.
Sanchez has come under scrutiny from the pundits in recent weeks, and Scholes did not hold on from his criticism on Tuesday after the attacker dropped another average performance in the United shirt. Scholes also appeared to hint that the likes of Anthony Martial and Juan Mata should earn equal opportunities in the starting line-up and Sanchez should be the one to make way owing to his average form.
He told BT Sport: “[Marcus] Rashford was frightening on that left side on Saturday, but he moved him to bring Sanchez into what he thinks is his best position.[Sanchez] gave the ball away so often and his manager has to see that in the 10 games he has played, he has not been good. He needs to choose his best front three and be brave enough to leave one out. At the moment, Sanchez is the one to leave out.”
Sanchez was a surprise signing for Manchester United during the winter transfer window after they managed to settle on a swap agreement with Arsenal, which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way. Since then, the pair have gone through contrasting patterns and the Gunners appear to have got the better deal with Mkhitaryan making a bigger contribution in a short space of time.
Mkhitaryan has contributed six assists and two goals in the space of just eight appearances for the Gunners, and this record has been vastly superior to Sanchez’s tally of two assists and one goal in 10 matches for United.
