Wayne Rooney speaks on Paul Pogba’s future at Manchester United

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has urged the club’s board to make a decision over Paul Pogba’s future before the start of the Premier League season. The France international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid this summer but so far, Los Blancos have not made an official approach to land his signature.

Still, the speculation over the midfielder’s future has refused to cease and Rooney has suggested that Pogba’s future may be dependent on the mutual decision between the manager, board and the player himself, he said: “Should they [sell him]? It’s obviously down to the club, the board, the manager but also the player. I think if the player wants to stay, he’ll stay and prove what a good player he is. Again I think behind the scenes I’m sure they’re working on ways whether it’s to keep him or to let him go.”

Pogba ignited the speculation regarding his future last month after he admitted that he may prefer a new challenge after three seasons with United. Since then, he has been regularly touted to make the switch to the Bernabeu but that has not been the case with Los Blancos considering whether to break their transfer record for the World Cup winner.

At present, United are understood to value Pogba at around £172m and Los Blancos seem unlikely to match the figure. Still, a move cannot be completely ruled out, considering the 13-time European champions are aiming to offload some of the deadwood to recoup finances for another big-money purchase this summer.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have made just two signings in the form of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer. The same could change during the final days of the Premier League transfer window, considering the club are reportedly in advanced negotiations to land Bruno Fernandes and Paulo Dybala from Sporting and Juventus respectively.
