In the summer of 2016, Manchester United paid a hefty fee of £90 million to activate the return of Paul Pogba (whom they let go for free) from Serie A club Juventus. Since then, Pogba has made it to the news headlines for both the good and bad reasons.
Since Pogba re-joined United, he has recorded some great individual performances in the red shirt, one of which was in the 2-3 comeback win against the noisy neighbors Manchester City – a game in which he scored two goals.
However, he hasn’t been as consistent as expected and has come under fire by both the club’s fans and pundits in recent times. The Frenchman performed on the global stage for his country, guiding France to World Cup glory in 2018, capping off a great tournament with a goal in the 4-2 victory over Croatia in the final.
José Mourinho, the manager who engineered Pogba’s move back to United once had a bust-up with the midfielder in training, then came to the media to label the player a ‘virus’ having stripped him of the captain’s armband after only wielding it for a short time. The Portuguese manager – who is now the head coach at Tottenham – fell out with Pogba and a couple of other United players before getting fired by the United board. At the time mybettingsite.uk had him at short odds to be gone at the end of the season, but it seems there were few clubs with the means or will to take on such an inconsistent, high-earning player.
Of all the pundits to have come for the head of Pogba, the most recent is Jamie Carragher. The Liverpool and England legend said he believes the Manchester United midfielder should not be regarded as world-class, and that the Old Trafford outfit should consider cashing in on the 28-year-old while they can still sell him for a huge amount.
Since January, United have signed two top-class Midfielders in Bruno Fernandes (from Sporting Lisbon) in the winter transfer window and Donny Van de Beek (from Ajax) in the summer. While Bruno has become a mainstay in the United midfield after a stunning start to life as a Red Devil, Van de Beek has found opportunities hard to come by, with Olé still trying to accommodate Pogba.
However, Carragher is of the notion that United can do better with Van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes at the heart of the Red Devils midfield and should finally let Pogba go.
