Manchester United are up to second place on the Premier League table after the win over Newcastle United in their week 25 clash at the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday night. The Red Devils had been demoted from second to third position earlier on Sunday following the win recorded by Leicester City over Aston Villa. Leicester City and Manchester United started the weekend on 46 points but the latter was in second place as a result of the superior goal difference. Leicester City defeated Aston Villa 2-1 away from home to move three points above Manchester United into second place. Leicester City raced into a 2-0 lead at the half-time break courtesy the goals from the Three Lions of England duo James Maddison and Harvey Barnes. Hosts Aston Villa pulled one back in the second half through new signing Bertrand Traore to setup a nervy finish for the Foxes. In the end, they were able to hold on for an impressive victory to leapfrog Manchester United into second place.
Manchester United would later regain their place as the second best team in the English top flight from Leicester City with the win over Newcastle United at home. The Red Devils beat the Northeast club 3-1 to move above the Foxes and back to second place on goal difference. The league game between Manchester United and Newcastle United was the final game on Sunday in the English top flight. Marcus Rashford scored the opening goal on the half hour mark before it was cancelled out by Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin six minutes later. Manchester United needed a big second half showing to secure the three points at stake with the two clubs at one goal apiece at the start of the second half and they managed to pull it off courtesy the goals from Welshman Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes. Ex-Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes sealed the win from the spot after Marcus Rashford had won the penalty.
